Bearing Witness: Resources

Service Devotional

Those seeking a service devotional to accompany this exhibit are encouraged to obtain a copy of “Praying the Stations of the Cross: Finding Hope in a Weary Land” (Eerdmans Publishing Co., 2019). Readings from Scripture, prayers, and a meditation are provided for each Station. The service can be used while viewing the exhibit and, afterward, while praying the Stations in group, home, church, or other appropriate settings.

The book contains reproductions of each of Margaret Adams Parker’s original woodcuts, as well as text by the artist, including the introductory sections (“Why the Stations,” “Passion Meditations in Word, Image, and Song,” “A History of the Stations,” and “Suggestions for Praying the Stations”) and an “Afterword.” The latter describes how Parker came to create the Stations, which comprise not only the series of woodcuts on exhibit at St. Michael’s but also a series of charcoal drawings (these became the basis for the woodcuts) and a series of paintings.

Contributions from Parker’s collaborator and co-author, The Rev. Katherine Sonderegger, Ph.D, a professor of theology at Virginia Theological Seminary, include the beautifully written theological reflections (each called “Meditation”), an “Afterword,” and opening and closing prayers for the authors’ “Stations” service. Also provided is an extensive annotated resources list.

“Praying the Stations” is available from Bookshop, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and other book sellers.

Stations Series on Artist’s Website

Both the woodcuts, which are two-feet-high relief prints on paper, and the paintings, which are four feet high and on birchwood panels, can be viewed on the artist’s Website:

Service Times

Sunday Eucharist at St. Michael's is a comprehensive service of both Word and Sacrament. We read from the Bible, we recite or sing a psalm, and we listen to a sermon. Then we pray for the Church and the world, and we ask God's forgiveness for our sins. Finally, we greet one another in the peace of Christ and move to the sacramental service of the Holy Communion.

At services of Holy Eucharist, all baptized persons are welcome to receive holy communion. We also offer blessings to those who for any reason are not able or not comfortable receiving this sacrament.Children are always welcome at the communion rail. Learn more about Episcopal Worship
