Composting at St. Michael's
In keeping with our values to care for God’s creation, and in compliance with the Diocesan resolution to discontinue the use of single-stream plastic products, St. Michael’s is taking full advantage of Arlington County’s composting program, beginning with coffee hour on July 16, 2023.
You may notice new signage on waste receptacles in the parish hall. All disposable cups, plates and even utensils used for coffee hour are compostable and accepted by Arlington County’s program. The County accepts compostable products that have been BPI certified and St. Michael’s now only stocks these certified items for use at St. Michael’s events. These should be discarded in the new Compost receptacle in the Parish Hall or the green yard waste bin outside. The biodegradable bags lining the indoor receptacle are also compostable.
- Food soiled napkins, plates, cups, and even utensils go in the new compost receptacle.
- Food scraps go in the new compost receptacle.
- Coffee grounds and filters go in the compost receptacle.
- All of the above now go into the green bin, along with yard waste. (We already have replaced one of our black bins with an additional green bin because we are now reducing our landfill waste.)
